Day 131: Fingers Crossed for the Penalty

In their living room in Freiburg, Katja (A) and Steffen (B) are watching SC Freiburg on TV with their daughter Emmi (C).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Elfmeter für Freiburg! Emmi, schnell, drück die Daumen, genau wie Papa!

    A penalty to Freiburg! Emmi, quick, press your thumbs for luck, just like Dad!

  2. B

    Und zwar fest! Vorhin hatten wir schon Schwein, jetzt muss der Ausgleich her.

    And press hard! We already had a pig earlier, now we need the equaliser.

    Wieso Daumen, und was für ein Schwein? Ich versteh nur Bahnhof.

    Why thumbs, and what pig? It's all Greek to me.

    Das sagt man nur so, genau wie dein „nur Bahnhof verstehen“. Schwein haben heißt Glück haben, und Daumendrücken soll Glück bringen.

    That's just an expression, like your 'it's all Greek to me'. Having a pig means being lucky, and pressing your thumbs is supposed to bring luck.

    Okay, ich drück ganz fest. Oh nein, der Torwart hat ihn gehalten!

    OK, I'm pressing really hard. Oh no, the keeper's saved it!

    Moment, der war viel zu früh von der Linie! Das muss der Schiri gesehen haben.

    Hang on, he was off his line far too early! The ref must have seen that.

  7. C

    Er pfeift und zeigt wieder auf den Punkt! Diesmal drück ich beide Daumen, einer war wohl zu wenig.

    He's blowing his whistle and pointing to the spot again! This time I'm pressing both thumbs, one apparently wasn't enough.
