Day 124: The Driver's Quarrel With Dispatch
In a taxi from Frankfurt airport, Konstantin (A), a passenger, overhears his driver, Ralf (B), arguing over the radio with the dispatch office.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

A
Entschuldigung, ich will mich nicht einmischen, aber das klang nach Ärger mit Ihrer Zentrale.
Sorry, I don't mean to interfere, but that sounded like trouble with your dispatch office.
-
B
Das kann man wohl sagen. Die gönnen mir seit Wochen weder lange Fahrten noch eine Pause.
You can say that again. For weeks they haven't let me have a long fare or a break.
-
A
Sind Sie sicher? Manchmal fühlt sich so was ungerechter an, als es ist.
Are you sure? Sometimes things like that feel more unfair than they are.
-
B
Von wegen! Ich kriege nicht nur die meisten Kurzstrecken, sondern auch die längsten Anfahrten.
Far from it! Not only do I get the most short trips, I also get the longest drives out to pick people up.
-
A
An Ihrer Stelle würde ich das lösen, indem ich zwei Wochen lang jede Fahrt samt Anfahrt aufschreibe.
If I were you, I'd sort it out by writing down every fare, drive to the pick-up included, for two weeks.
-
B
Damit mich die Zentrale mit meinem Zettel auslacht? Sind Sie Anwalt oder so was?
So that dispatch can laugh at me and my bit of paper? Are you a lawyer or something?
-
A
Mediator. Und glauben Sie mir: Mit Zahlen löst man einen Streit schneller als mit Lautstärke.
A mediator. And believe me, figures settle an argument faster than shouting does.
