Day 112: Who Gets Dad's Sourdough?

After closing time in their parents' bakery in Bamberg, Fiona (A), a trainee baker, talks to her older sister Janina (B), who is studying to be a teacher.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.

    Papa hat heute wieder von „deiner“ Bäckerei geschwärmt. Wann sagst du's ihm endlich?

    Dad was going on about 'your' bakery again today. When are you finally going to tell him?

  2. B

    Wie denn? Bevor ich was sagen kann, erzählt er schon, dass ich mal seinen Sauerteig erbe.

    How? Before I can say anything, he's already telling me I'll inherit his sourdough one day.

    Du kannst aber nicht einfach Lehrerin werden, ohne Mama und Papa reinen Wein einzuschenken.

    But you can't just become a teacher without coming clean with Mum and Dad.

    Ich weiß. Aber für Papa ist es Verrat, wenn ich unterrichte, statt Brötchen zu backen.

    I know. But to Dad it's betrayal if I teach instead of baking rolls.

    Und wenn ich die Bäckerei übernehme? Sobald ich meinen Meister habe, natürlich.

    And what if I take over the bakery? As soon as I've got my master baker's certificate, of course.

    Moment mal, wolltest du nach der Ausbildung nicht unbedingt ein Jahr nach Australien?

    Hang on, weren't you dead set on going to Australia for a year after your apprenticeship?

    Australien läuft mir nicht weg. Und bis Papa in Rente geht, hab ich den Meister längst in der Tasche.

    Australia isn't going anywhere. And long before Dad retires, I'll have that certificate in the bag.
