Day 109: A Vaccination Record From Two Germanys

At a GP's surgery in Magdeburg, Valerie (A), a young woman who has just moved from Bavaria to start work at a nursery, sees Dr Mario Lehmann (B).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.

    Der ist beim Umzug verschwunden. Aber ich soll als Kind die Masern gehabt haben.

    It went missing when I moved. But I'm supposed to have had measles as a child.

    Das dürfte stimmen, ist aber kein Nachweis. Bei meinen älteren Patienten gibt's das Problem übrigens nie.

    That's probably true, but it isn't proof. I never have this problem with my older patients, by the way.

    Wieso, sind die Leute in Magdeburg ordentlicher als in Bayern?

    Why, are people in Magdeburg better organised than in Bavaria?

    Nein, aber in der DDR war Impfen Pflicht, sodass meine Generation fast lückenlos geimpft ist. Bei Ihnen machen wir erst mal einen Bluttest.

    No, but vaccination was compulsory in the GDR, so my generation is almost completely vaccinated. In your case we'll do a blood test first.

    Also doch eine Nadel! Dann hätte ich mich ja gleich impfen lassen können.

    So it's a needle after all! I might as well have just had the jab.
