Day 102: A Refurbished Phone That Won't Last

In their parents' living room in Nuremberg, Samir (A) shows his older brother Ali (B), who works in an electronics shop, the refurbished phone he bought online.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Guck dir das an: Nach zwei Stunden ist der Akku schon wieder leer.

    Look at this: the battery's flat again after two hours.

    Das generalüberholte Handy aus dem Internet? Hättest du mal bei mir im Laden gefragt.

    The refurbished phone from the internet? You should have asked me at the shop.

    Bei euch hätte es das Doppelte gekostet. Und in der Anzeige stand „Akku mindestens 85 Prozent“.

    At your shop it would have cost twice as much. And the listing said 'battery at least 85 per cent'.

    Zeig mal. Laut Einstellungen hat der Akku nur noch 61 Prozent Kapazität, das muss der Händler gewusst haben.

    Let's see. According to the settings, the battery's down to 61 per cent capacity: the seller must have known that.

    Und jetzt? Ich hab keine Lust, mich wochenlang mit einer Hotline rumzustreiten.

    So what now? I can't be bothered to argue with a hotline for weeks.

    Es lohnt sich trotzdem, das zu reklamieren: neuer Akku oder Geld zurück. Die Mail schreibe ich.

    It's still worth complaining: a new battery or your money back. I'll write the email.
