Day 20: A Dripping Umbrella in Bonn
On a crowded tram in Bonn on a rainy day, Karl Brenner (A), an older passenger with a large umbrella, sits next to Johanna Weiß (B), a young woman working on her laptop.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

A
Quite a downpour, isn't it? Only a proper umbrella is a little unwieldy on a full tram.
-
B
Might it perhaps be within your power to tilt it a little to the left? It's been dripping onto my keyboard for three stops.
-
A
Oh, I do beg your pardon. Would it help you if I wedged it between my knees?
-
B
That would help enormously, thank you. Forgive the roundabout phrasing, but "Your umbrella is dripping" didn't sound polite enough to me.
-
A
On the contrary, a démarche of the very first order: you turned a nuisance into a request that can't be refused.
-
B
You say "démarche" like someone who has delivered a few himself. Were you in the Foreign Service, by any chance?
-
A
For forty-one years, most recently as ambassador in Dublin, an expert on rain, in a manner of speaking. And how do you know the word?
-
B
Next Monday I start attaché training at the Foreign Office, and all my preparation is on this laptop.
-
A
Then I'd recommend just one thing: keep phrasing things like that, even if one day a whole minister drips onto your laptop.
-
B
Duly noted, Ambassador. Only now your umbrella is dripping onto your own shoe, which in your line of work is probably a unilateral concession.
