Day 18: Beeswax Wraps in the Lions' Den

On pitch day for the pupils' companies at a school in Stuttgart, eleven-year-old Ida (A) presents her class's beeswax sandwich wraps to her class teacher (B), who is playing a tough investor from a TV show.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Liebe Löwin, man nehme ein Baumwolltuch, bügle Bienenwachs ein, und fertig ist die Frischhaltefolie ohne Plastik.

    Dear Lioness, take one cotton cloth, iron in some beeswax, and there you have cling film without the plastic.

    Nette Idee, aber wir sind hier nicht beim Basteln. Was kostet das Ding, und wer zahlt so was?

    Sweet idea, but this isn't arts and crafts. What does the thing cost, and who pays for something like that?

    Fünf Euro, und damit packen Sie ein Jahr lang Ihr Pausenbrot ein, ganz ohne Folie im Müll.

    Five euros, and with it you can wrap your sandwich for a year without any film in the bin.

  4. B

    Fünf Euro für einen Lappen mit Wachs? Ich bin knallhart, Ida: zwei Euro, oder ich investiere nicht.

    Five euros for a rag with wax on it? I'm ruthless, Ida: two euros, or I don't invest.

    Dann machen wir Verlust. Genau gerechnet, kostet uns jedes Tuch 2,40 Euro, Strom fürs Bügeleisen inklusive.

    Then we'd make a loss. Worked out exactly, each cloth costs us 2.40 euros, electricity for the iron included.

    Schön und gut, aber fünf Euro zahlt dir kein Mensch. Dafür kriegt man ja fast drei Butterbrezeln!

    All well and good, but nobody's going to pay you five euros. You can get nearly three butter pretzels for that!

    Beim Elternabend angeboten, waren alle sechzig Tücher in einer Stunde weg. Macht 156 Euro Gewinn, zu Ihrem Preis 24 Euro Verlust.

    Offered at the parents' evening, all sixty cloths were gone within an hour. That makes 156 euros' profit, and at your price a 24-euro loss.

    Ich bin sprachlos, und das als Mathelehrerin. Also gut: fünfzig Euro für die Hälfte eurer Firma.

    I'm speechless, and me a maths teacher. All right then: fifty euros for half of your company.

  9. A

    Ich bin raus, Frau Löwin. Aber ein Tuch für Ihr Pausenbrot verkaufe ich Ihnen gern, zum vollen Preis natürlich.

    I'm out, Mrs Lioness. But I'll gladly sell you a cloth for your sandwiches, at full price, of course.
