   Young man, could you explain this letter from my health insurer to me? It has 'sofern', 'soweit' and 'wenngleich' in one single sentence.

   Of course. Provided your prescription charges reach two per cent of your gross annual income, you're exempt from them for the rest of the year.

   Und „soweit eine schwerwiegende chronische Erkrankung vorliegt“: Was soll das nun wieder heißen?

   And 'insofar as a serious chronic illness is present': what's that supposed to mean?

   Im Grunde dasselbe, nur gilt für chronisch Kranke ein Prozent. Man hätte auch einfach „wenn“ schreiben können, aber dann verstünde es ja jeder.

   Basically the same, except that for the chronically ill it's one per cent. They could simply have written 'if', but then everybody would understand it.

   Eben nicht, junger Mann: „Sofern“ fragt, ob, „soweit“ fragt, wie weit. Und das eine Prozent gibt's nur mit einer Bescheinigung vom Arzt.

   Not at all, young man: 'sofern' asks whether, 'soweit' asks how far. And you only get the one per cent with a certificate from your doctor.

   Dreißig Jahre lang, bei der Kasse drei Straßen weiter. Den Satz mit „wenngleich“ habe ich selbst verfasst, ich erkenne ihn am Komma.

   For thirty years, at the insurer three streets away. I wrote the sentence with 'wenngleich' myself: I recognise it by the comma.

   Dann übersetze ich den Beipackzettel mal in Ihre Sprache: Die Patientin nehme morgens eine Tablette, es sei denn, der Arzt verordnet etwas anderes.

   Then let me translate the package leaflet into your language: the patient shall take one tablet in the morning, unless the doctor prescribes otherwise.

   Nicht schlecht, aber wir hätten „soweit nicht anders verordnet“ geschrieben. Das ist kürzer und duldet keinen Widerspruch.

   Not bad, but we'd have written 'unless otherwise prescribed'. It's shorter and brooks no argument.
